NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Biology Chapter 1 The Living World

NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Biology Chapter 1 The Living World covers the diversity of living organisms, characteristics that define life, the need for classification and nomenclature, and taxonomic categories and hierarchy.

Overview of Topics & Subtopics (Click to Jump)

1. What is Living?

Short Note:

• Living organisms show characteristics such as growth, reproduction, metabolism, cellular organisation, consciousness, and the ability to sense and respond to stimuli.

• Metabolism is a defining feature exclusive to living organisms — it is the sum total of all chemical reactions occurring in an organism's body.

• Growth in living organisms is from inside (intrinsic), whereas non-living things can grow by accumulation of material on the surface (extrinsic).

2. Nomenclature and Classification

Short Note:

• Binomial Nomenclature (given by Carl Linnaeus) assigns each species a two-part scientific name: genus name + specific epithet, written in italics (e.g., Mangifera indica).

• Taxonomy is the branch of science dealing with identification, nomenclature, and classification of organisms.

3. Taxonomic Categories and Hierarchy

Short Note:

• The taxonomic hierarchy, from broadest to narrowest, is: Kingdom → Phylum/Division → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species.

• Species is the basic taxonomic unit/category, representing a group of similar organisms capable of interbreeding.

NCERT Textbook Exercise Questions

Why are living organisms classified?
Answer: Living organisms are classified to make their identification and study easier, to understand the relationships and similarities/differences among them, and to organise the vast diversity of life in a systematic and convenient manner.
Define taxon. Give some examples of taxa at different hierarchical levels.
Answer: A taxon is a unit or category used in classifying organisms, representing a particular rank. Examples: Kingdom – Animalia, Phylum – Chordata, Class – Mammalia, Order – Carnivora, Family – Felidae, Genus – Panthera, Species – leo.
Write the process of writing the scientific name of mango and explain the binomial nomenclature rules used.
Answer: The scientific name of mango is Mangifera indica, written in italics (or underlined when handwritten). The first word (Mangifera) is the genus name with the first letter capitalised, and the second word (indica) is the specific epithet, written in lower case; both together follow the rules of binomial nomenclature as universally accepted.
Define and understand the terms: Species, Genus, and Family with suitable examples.
Answer: Species is a group of similar individuals capable of interbreeding (e.g. Panthera leo – lion). Genus is a group of related species (e.g. Panthera includes lion, tiger, leopard). Family is a group of related genera (e.g. Felidae includes Panthera and Felis).
